Golf MK7 / Audi A3 / Leon / Octavia poor interior heater operation
If you're having problems with low heat output on your Golf MK7 / Audi A3 (in fact, lots of VW Audi Skoda and SEAT models from approx' 2013) then it's very likely that you're suffering from a common fault with these models - the heater matrix failing.
The heater matrix is a mini radiator behind your dashboard that takes hot water from the engine circuit to warm the inside of your car up.
These get clogged / blocked and this stops the hot water getting in there and then you get no warm air.
This is very, very common on Golf MK7 2013 opwards, Audi A3 8v 2013 onwards, SEAT Leon / Toledo and Skoda Octavia of the same age.
The causes are often a silica gel bag in the header tank that's split and blocked up the cooling system (we have a page about that here)
The only option is to flush the cooling system and replace the failed / blocked heater matrix.
We have teamed up with Mahle to bring you excellent quality replacement heater matrix units.
The Golf MK7 is a bit of a pain because two types were fitted at the factory and no record was kept of what was fitted to each car, Some cars have a Denso branded one fitted, and others a Valeo. They are not interchangeable and the only way to see which one you have is to get under the dashboard and look for the manufacturers name on the existing unit. Edit, you can find this no the pollen filter housing cover, see this image:
